| Leelanau County Solid Waste Programs | ||||||
Leelanau County offers recycling, household hazardous waste collections, and electronics recycling for households.
The recycling and HHW programs are currently funded by a $25 per household annual fee, assessed on households in Leelanau County's three villages and in Centerville, Elmwood, Empire, Glen Arbor, Leelanau, Leland, and Suttons Bay Townships. The fee was passed by voters in these municipalities in an election held in August 2006. The fee was not passed by Bingham, Cleveland, Kasson, and Solon Townships, and cannot be assessed to households in those townships. Bingham, Kasson, and Solon Townships have entered into an agreement with the county for the fee to be placed on the winter tax bills. Cleveland Township is pursuing another vote on the issue. Residents in Cleveland Township may pay a voluntary fee of $30 ($25 plus $5 administrative costs) to participate in the program for 2008. They will receive a "paid participant" card that is valid through the end of 2008. Checks can be made payable to Leelanau County and submitted to the Leelanau County Planning office, 8527 E Government Center Dr., Suite 108 Suttons Bay MI 49682. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact the Leelanau County Planning office at (231) 256-9812. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Leelanau County Planning and Community Development at 256-9812 or toll free at 866-256-9711, Ext. 6. |
