HABITAT
LEELANAU SITES [Click here to view full size picture] This section describes typical habitats or ecological communities present in Leelanau County. In addition, other areas such as cropland and pasture may also provide wildlife habitat.

Habitats are comprised of species (plants, animals, and fungi) that commonly are found in association, and tend to occupy sites with similar physical characteristics. The degree of soil wetness, availability of sunlight, nutrient availability in the soil, and history of the site are the most important determinants of what types of species are likely to occupy any given area.
