Leelanau County is a peninsula projecting into Lake Michigan. Its terrain of rolling hills is largely covered with woodlands, orchards, a variety of other agricultural fields and many inland lakes.

Urban presence is limited to eleven small towns or villages scattered about the peninsula. This geography has attracted those who wish to live in or to enjoy their recreation in a rural environment additionally blessed with several hundred miles of Great Lake and inland lake shoreline.
