Non-Toxic Alternatives

Many of the products we use around the home contain hazardous materials that can be dangerous to us and the environment. Try using non-toxic alternatives - they are safer, cheaper, and easier to dispose of. Following are some recipes and suggestions to take the place of hazardous materials in household chores. Click here for suggestions from the Environmental Protection Agency and Purdue University.

Household Cleaners Top
For general cleaning, use baking soda, whiting (powdered chalk, sold at hardware and paint stores), or a non-chlorinated scrubbing powder such as Bon Ami.

General household stains can be cleaned and disinfected with borax solutions.

GREASE: To remove grease, use full-strength vinegar plus salt.

SINKS & COUNTER TOPS: Use borax to remove spots on counters. Use vinegar mixed with warm water and salt to clean sinks and counter tops.

OVENS & GRILLS: Clean and remove rust from tools with a pumice stick.

DISHWASHER DETERGENT: Use half the recommended amount of automatic dishwasher detergent.

ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER: 1 gallon of hot water mixed with ¼ cup of vinegar can replace ammonia or chlorine. Instead of a scouring pad, which contains both phosphorous and chlorine, try Bon Ami.

TOILET BOWL CLEANER: Use a paste of borax and lemon juice; scrub with a stiff brush. Or use a mixture of 2-3 teaspoons each of borax and liquid dish soap in 2 quarts of hot water to clean floors and toilets.

BATHROOM CLEANER: Try baking soda when scrubbing surfaces clean and wipe surfaces with a ¼ cup vinegar, 1 gallon hot water mixture.

MILDEW: Scrub with a vinegar and salt mixture.
Laundry Top
  • Use powdered, phosphate-free detergent; use only the prescribed amount. For extra whitening, use soap flakes and washing soda.
  • For perspiration stains, weak water solutions of white vinegar, lemon juice or aspirin can be used as a pre-soak to remove stains, or soak clothes in a solution of corn meal and water.
  • Try a water and vinegar mixture on weak stains as a stain remover. On tough stains try soaking the spot in a mixture of ¼ cup borax & 2 cups of cold water before washing. Rub corn meal and water into greasy stains then rinse with lemon juice before machine washing.
  • Club soda and cold water will remove fresh blood stains and chocolate stains. Blot with a clean cloth.
Gardening Top
  • Instead of using fertilizers, compost your waste & use as fertilizer or use organic fertilizers such as bone meal, fish emulsion, and manure.
  • Instead of using herbicides, cover your garden with plastic or mulch such as alfalfa hay to prevent weed germination. Pull weeds when they first appear.
  • For ants: sprinkle boric acid on ant trails and where ants are found.
  • For slugs and snails: place bowls of beer around the garden or sprinkle sawdust, ashes or lime around the affected areas.
Miscellaneous Top
AIR FRESHENERS: Try herbal potpourri or cotton balls soaked in vanilla, or boil cinnamon and cloves in a small amount of water. An open box of baking soda absorbs refrigerator odors. Borax sprinkled in the bottom of garbage or yard waste controls odors.

DISINFECTANT: Mix ½ cup of borax with 1 gallon of hot water.

PET STAINS & ODORS: Use a mixture of ¼ cup vinegar & ¼ cup liquid soap. Rub in the mixture, blot the stain and rinse with water.

RUST: Warm vinegar and scrubbing will remove rust from dishes, sinks and teapots.

GREASE & OIL STAINS: Grease and oil can be removed from garage floors by sprinkling the trouble area with fresh cat litter. Let stand for a few hours then sweep up.

WINDOW CLEANER: Mix vinegar and water.

MOTHBALLS: Instead of using mothballs, double wrap clean articles in tightly sealed plastic bags or in a tight container before storing.
