The full-time staff of the Corrections Division includes three sergeants in charge of County Jail operations; one Staff Sergeant, and 12 Correctional Officers.
Recently, we welcomed the addition of a new Jail Administrator, Cheryl King. Cheryl will assume the duties of commanding officer at the new correctional facility, serving under Sheriff Michael Oltersdorf. At right, Cheryl is pictured being sworn in by Michigan Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Weaver.
At the present time the jail has a state-set maximum population of 80 inmates at any given time. A new county jail facility is now complete. The Corrections Division moved to their new facility just east of Lake Leelanau on Government Center Drive in May 2005.
State-certified correctional officers are responsible for inmate care and accountability, and for jail security. Their daily duties include booking and releasing inmates, giving court-ordered alcohol tests, administering any prescribed medicines to prisoners, plus transporting inmates to court appearances and to and from other jail facilities as well as, in some cases, to state prisons.
