Working under the supervision of the Law Enforcement Command Division, the Mounted Unit Special Deputies volunteer their service to our county! Each member is responsible for their uniforms, equipment and related horse costs. The horses are owned by the members. Leelanau County does not fund any portion of the Mounted Unit.
The officers of the Mounted Unit participate in ceremonial events, special events where an additional uniform presence is requested and available for search & rescue duties! These deputies go through intensive training and must maintain proficiency with respect to their equestrian skills.
The unit is registered as a "non-profit" organization and conducts many fundraisers throughout the year. Ed Budd serves as the ranking command officer and donations can be sent to the Sheriff's Office in care of him.
