Congratulations Deputy Bailey!

Leelanau County Sheriff Deputy Bob Bailey accepted the D.A.R.E. assignment as of November 2003. Clint Kerr, who previously held the position, was appointed to Detective in early November 2004. Congratulations are in order to Detective Kerr as well!

The black & white D.A.R.E. cruiser was put into service in November 2002. Its special design is characteristic of an era gone by. Designed to be unique and highly visible, this vehicle's purpose is to promote the D.A.R.E. program through student contacts and special events! The special paint scheme was donated by Bruce Braden of Bingham Body Shop. The $2,500 custom wheels and tires were donated by "Discount Tire Company". The Sheriff's Youth League donated the special graphics displayed on the "black & white".The D.A.R.E. program is not funded by tax dollars. Special fundraising events, private donations and grants keep D.A.R.E. going! Donations can be made to "D.A.R.E. Leelanau" in care of Deputy Bob Bailey.

Victim's Response Team

Victim's Response Team
Implemented in 1997, The Victim's Response Team is a group of volunteers who respond to a scene and provide immediate comfort and assistance to any person who is a victim or has experienced trauma while in our county. This team of volunteers is made up of dedicated citizens who help victim's and survivors work through a crisis. They can offer shortterm crisis intervention or make referrals to the appropriate agencies / service providers. Typically, they are called upon to provide comfort, until family members or other officials arrive. The team is utilized for auto collisions, death notification, suicides, domestic assaults, lost persons, house fires and any situation where they can offer help. All members are screened and are highly trained.

Forgotten Man Ministries
This program has been adopted at the Leelanau County Jail. Pastor Bob Hall, wife Jamie, son Jerry and Pastor Mike Riness spread the gospel and provide the foundation for the moral, spiritual and personal guidance for jail inmates. They discuss family, scripture, personal problems, loneliness, values, ethical behavior or whatever else the prisoner wishes to discuss. The inmates volunteer in order to participate in this nondenominational program. This is a national program that focuses on the jail and prison populations due to their specific needs and concerns. This program compliments our Sunday worship service that is provided by our local, dedicated clergy who also volunteer in our jail. For more information please call 231-922-4504 or email jhall96586@aol.com.

Community Work Program
Offered to the Judges, the CWP is an option to the jailing of non-violent offenders who pose no risk to the community. The work crew is supervised by Deputy Margaret Arena who is always on site and closely supervises the participants. The CWP crew provides labor for governmental units, thus freeing up public employees to address more important tasks. The workers arrive at the jail in the morning, and at night they go home to their families. The county saves incarceration costs and the participants pay to participate. Work sites include county roadways, County Tower site, Maple Valley Nursing Home, Myles Kimberly & Old Settlers Parks, Cedar & Empire Fire Stations, Suttons Bay & Cedar baseball fields, Suttons Bay Friendship Center, County Road Commission garage and Township buildings. The prisoners pay their debt to society and the taxpayers save money!

TRIAD

TRIAD
TRIAD is a triangle with 3 points. At the top is SENIORS and at the bottom are POLICE and SHERIFF working together to build a pyramid of strength and stability to help those Seniors in need! We have formed a "S.A.L.T. Council (Seniors and Law enforcement working Together) in Leelanau County. This board is responsible to listen and to assist Seniors in addressing their special needs or concerns. The Council is made up of various "partners" in the community who put Seniors "first" and focus on serving those needs. Our Seniors have paid their "dues" for many years and now deserve whatever services law enforcement can deliver or refer. Our chair of the Board of Directors is Virginia Magda (256-7707) works closely with Rosie Steffens (Commission on Aging 256-7590) in communicating the needs of our Seniors in Leelanau County. Please feel free to call either Virginia or Rosie for assistance or additional information.

Community Policing

Community Policing
Michigan State University's School of Criminal Justice and your Sheriff's Office entered into a partnership in the Fall of 1998. The Regional Policing Institute (MSU) provides training, organizational support and consultation at no cost to the County of Leelanau. Jane White and Jerry Boles provide "on site facilitation" to the regional membership on a regular basis. Also participating are Grand Traverse Band Police, Grand Traverse and Kalkaska Sheriff's Offices, Traverse City Police, Traverse CIty State Police Post, Bellaire & Harbor Springs Police and Gerrish Township Police. The basic philosophy of "Community Policing" is to provide services in a non-traditional manner, apply the principles of business to the delivery of police services. Historically, police drove around attempting to "detect" crime-waiting for something to occur. Operationally, we were reactionary in solving problems and confronting issues. The new way of thinking about police service is from the customers perspective-doing with people rather that doing for people. We need to view our operation as a public funded business that provides a customer based service while cultivating partnerships in our communities to solve the problems!

Sheriff's  Telling  Our  Parents  and  Promoting  Educated  Drivers

The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Michigan Sheriff's Association, AAA Michigan insurance, and 65 other Michigan counties are rolling out the STOPPED program.

This program is a creative partnership that will save lives.  It gives parents a tool to use in addressing their teens driving behaviors.  STOPPED provides a window decal for every vehicle that will be driven by a person under 21 years of age.

Parents simply register their vehicles online at www.michigansheriff.com and a
STOPPED sticker is mailed to their home to be placed on the vehicle's windshield.  It serves as a visible reminder to the young driver to drive safely and responsibly, and that should he or she be pulled over for any reason, Law Enforcement officers will complete a notification card.  The parents will receive a letter regarding the incident.

The notification feature makes parents aware of any potential problems and enables them to enforce rules they have set regarding teenage driving privileges.  Information in the letter includes the time, location, number of passengers, reason for the stop and whether a citation was issued.

Sgt. Mike Lamb is our Program Coordinator.  He is available for public speaking engagements to explain this program!  He can be contacted by calling
231-256-8606.
