NEWS RELEASE BOATING SAFETY CLASSES - SUMMER 2009 The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol will be offering boater safety classes this summer for boaters who will be at least 12 years of age by the end of the boating season. Students who successfully complete the course will receive certification, which will permit them to operate a boat with more than five horsepower without adult supervision. Personal Watercraft (PWC) operators must be at least 14 years of age and be in the possession of a boating safety certificate if born after December 31, 1978. In addition, youth 12 and 13 years of age can operate a PWC if they have a parent on board and both the operator and parent have a boating safety certificate with them at the time of operation. Also, some insurance companies offer reduced rates for owners who have taken a boating safety course. Therefore, parents or any other adult desiring to increase their boating knowledge, are welcome to take the class regardless of age.
Classes will be held on the following dates: June 22, 23 & 24 at the Leelanau County Law Enforcement Center July 6, 7 & 8 at the Glen Lake Yacht Club July 20, 21 & 22 at the Northport Fire Hall August 3, 4 & 5 at the Leelanau County Law Enforcement Center
All classes start at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 12:00 noon. Participants must attend all three days in the course sequence and pass a test to receive a certificate. There is no charge for the course, and the only requirement is the participants come with a positive attitude and a desire to be a safe boater. If you will be attending the June or August classes, you will access the training room from the rear of the Law Enforcement Center.
