Mission Statement:

Glen Lake Community Schools is committed to providing a safe learning environment that nurtures the intellect, character, and physical well-being of every student.

Background Information:

Glen Lake Community Schools is proudly educating students from kindergarten to 12th grade. The school strongly emphasizes the mastery of the basic skills of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The core curriculum is enhanced by music, art, drama, debate, current events, foreign language, journalism, family studies, foods, and a host of course work offered through dual enrollment, internships, and Internet based classes.

The entire school district is networked through a high-speed Ethernet connection including T1 Internet accessibility. Instruction is greatly enhanced through extensive technological hardware and software. Our students and staff benefit from the depth of the district technology availability.

There are a wide variety of school activities for everyone. Glen Lake is widely known for their successful sport teams. There are a total of nine sports that are offered to both males and females. Varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams are available in most sports. There are also other activities the students can get involved with such as: Student Government, Project HERO, Big Pals, School Plays, Band, National Honor Society, Envirothon, ect. The district is the "School of Choice" for the region and participates in the open enrollment agreement among all area districts.

History:

In June 1956, the Glen Lake Community Schools District was formed when a vote was passed to consolidate the four small schools of Cedar, Empire, Glen Arbor, and Maple City. Glen Lake High School was built on County Road 616 and was ready for use in January 1958, providing classrooms for grades 7-12. Elementary grades K-6 continued to meet in the four town schools.

In September 1968, four portable buildings had been moved onto the school property near the high school. An elementary principal's office, a multi-purpose room, and a kindergarten room were added to the portable buildings. Grades K-8 were able to meet together as Glen Lake Elementary.

In 1969 the first shop room was added to the high school. In 1979 the elementary/middle school wing was added along with a science room, extra classroom, and a library in the high school. Grades K-8 met in the new wing for the first time in September 1980.

During the 1992-1993 school year, an additional 50% more instructional space was added to the school building. These additions, combined with the remodeling of the previously existing building, have created an outstanding education complex.

All schools are fully accredited by the North Central Association. Glen Lake Community Schools was one of the first districts within the state to receive K-12 North Central accreditation. The staff is currently working toward upgrading their accreditation standards to meet the Transitions Accreditation standards in an attempt to ensure a seamless transition from grade to grade.

Awards and Honors:

Glen Lake Elementary was awarded the coveted governor's "Golden Apple Award" for excellence. Glen Lake High School received the "Governor's Cup" award for its large number of merit scholarship award winners. We believe our students and staff are second to none! Our "Laker Pride" is contagious!
We hope you will come visit us soon and see what we are all about!
