Glen Lake High School Students
and Leelanau County government came together in a unique project to update the county's 12 year old survey results. Glen Lake students in Mr. Don Miller's Civics class "tested" the 2003 County-wide Survey to assist in the development of questions, and formatting and clarity of the survey. All 21 students in the class took time away from their busy schedule to answer the questions and provide the county with input and suggestions. Along with the students, employees of Leelanau County government also took the test and provided their responses. This was a coordination effort between government and a public school.

"It's important to get our young citizens input," stated County Planning Director Trudy Galla. "They are vital stake-holders in the future of this county and we need to hear their opinions. Having some early results from them with regard to the survey questions was very useful for this project."

Students provided a lot of written suggestions on how Leelanau County could be improved, with the majority of suggestions dealing with improvement of the roads. Students also requested more teen activities, more recycling stations, more year-round employment, and lower prices of properties. Comments were also provided for developing homes around towns and saving more land. Although the sample size of students taking the test was not large enough to prepare a report with conclusions, a summary of responses is listed below.

The last county-wide survey was conducted in 1990. The 2003 county-wide survey is under the administration of M-TEC at the Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. 2000 surveys were mailed to randomly selected citizens in Leelanau County. Preliminary results will be available in late June with a full report scheduled for later this summer.
